Giorgio Stanta is Professor of Pathology at the University of Trieste and the leader of the Molecular Histopathology laboratory at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Trieste. He received many scientific appointments: -Scientific advisor for the “Group for the biological resources” of Italian Council of Minister -He is part of the board of the Interdepartmental center of molecular medicine of University of Trieste -promoter of the Society of the Italian Tumor Registries, of the Italian Group of Molecular Pathology and of the European Group of Molecular Pathology - He is the coordinator of the European Group for Molecular Analyses in Archive Tissues of the European Society of Pathology and he is member of the managing board of “Molecular Pathology Study Group” of “European Society of Pathology”. - He is the coordinator of the European project “Archive tissues: improving molecular medicine research and clinical practice” – IMPACTS (www.impactsnetwork.eu), which involves around 20 major university hospitals in 11 countries, with over 100 researchers. - He is member of the European project “ACUME 2” about the relationship “Science – Humanities”, with particular attention at the bioethical issues in human research. - He is member of the Advisory Board of Deutsche KrebsHilfe, with particular attention at biobanking. - He is the organizer of a virtual tissue biobaking network (Bio-banking Network: Molecular Evidence Medicine group, www.impactsnetwork.eu), which involves 18 European areas with 128 hospitals and 40 million inhabitants. - He is an external expert of the project "Development and evaluation of patho-anatomic tumor registry and tumor bank" in Croatia. - He was invited to participate in the organization of the International Cancer Genomics Consortium project. - He was appointed as “disease oriented” tissue biobanking expert of the European Biobanking and Biomoleculare Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI).

He is the coordinator of two multidisciplinary courses (Molecular Histopathology and Molecular Medicine). -He is the proposing teacher of the Doctorate of Nanotechnology and of the Doctorate in Molecular Medicine at Trieste University and he is liable for the Doctorates of Molecular diagnostic section -University teacher and supervisor in International Doctorates of Molecular Pathology with Lubiana University and with the Open University (London) -Supervisor of the Alpe Adria International Master in Molecular Medicine between Graz, Lubiana and Trieste Universities RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND COLLABORATIONS: - From 1986 is interested in methodologies to study RNA in fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues and developing methods for the quantitative analysis of RNA from this source. -Molecular alteration analysis in tumor progression. -Molecular pathology of breast, skin and urinary bladder cancer. -Epidemiology and molecular pathology of pediatric and juvenile tumors. -Epidemiology and molecular pathology of aging -Nanotechnology application to functional genomic analysis. -He is the coordinator of national and international projects in the fild of molecular pathology and technology innovation, with particular attention for molecular studies in paraffin embedded tissues - Collaboration with the National Institute of Aging (NIH-Bethesda-USA), the National Cancer Institute of the NIH of the United States and the Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, Florida) on malignant tumors in the elderly and longevity. -He is the coordinator of the European Group for molecular analyses in archive tissues (for the European Society of Pathology) and coordinator of the european project “Archive’s tissues: improving molecular medicine research and clinical practice” (IMPACTS), which involves 20 University Hospitals in 11 different countries and which has recently approved in the Sixth Framework Programme -He is project leader of the medical-biological part of a multidisciplinary project in collaboration between Italian nano-technologists and international institutions (Princeton University e Massachussetts Institut of Technology) for the planning and the manufacturing of innovative nanoarrays for the Association for the Molecular Biomedicine (Area Science Park, Trieste)
