Born in Trieste in 1948, Marina Sbisà attended the local university, from where she graduated in 1971 with a degree in Philosophy (supervisor: Guido Morpurgo-Tagliabue). In 1975, she became a researcher in the Philosophy Department of Trieste University. There she became later on associate professor of Semiotics (1992), associate professor of Philosophy of Language (1998) and full professor of Philosophy of Language (2001).She collaborated with the CIRD (interdepartmental center for research on teaching) and coordinates the CIMeL (interdepartmental center for research on mind and language). She was Head of the Department of Humanities of the University of Trieste and member of the Academic Senate from 2012 to 2015. She has worked in the fields of philosophy of language and semiotics, with particular attention to ordinary language philosophy, pragmatics, and discourse analysis. Within pragmatics, she has been concerned with speech act theory and implicit communication, studyingthe role of the latter in text comprehension. She has also worked in the area of gender studies, investigating representations of motherhood and feminine subjectivity, and on issues about linguistic and cultural identities. Her main current research activity comprises the reconstruction and reassessment of the thought of John L. Austin on themes such as language, action, knowledge and method in philosophy. She conducts and promotes activities of discourse analysis, particularly as regards scientific information, political information, and classificatory and discriminatory speech. Among her main works there are the volumes “Linguaggio, ragione, interazione” (Language, reason, interaction) (Il Mulino 1989; new electronic edition EUT 2009) and “Detto non detto. Le forme della comunicazione implicita” (Said not said. The forms of implicit communication) (Laterza 2007). She has published papers on international journals such as Journal of Pragmatics, Pragmatics, Intercultural Pragmatics, Lodz Papers in Pragmatics, Grazer Philosophische Studien, Facta Philosophica, European Journal of Analytic Philosophy, Ethics & Politics, Language and Communication, European Journal of Women’s Studies. She has published chapters in volumes belonging to Series in philosophy, pragmatics, or discourse analysis issued by John Benjamins, Palgrave Macmillan, Springer, Georg Olms. She has edited (with K. Turner) the volume "Pragmatics of Speech Actions" (Mouton de Gruyter 2013). She collaborated with J.O. Urmson (Oxford) on the revised edition of J.L. Austin, How to Do Things with Words (1975). From 1997 to 2005 she participated in several national research projects (PRIN) in the area of philosophy, directing local research units at Trieste University. From 2008 to 2010 she participated in a PRIN project as a member of the research unit of the University of Bologna, directed by Paolo Leonardi (national coordinator: Diego Marconi). From 2012 to 2015 she participated in a PRIN project as a member of the research unit of the University of Modena-Reggio, directed by Annalisa Coliva (nazional coordinator: Pasquale Frascolla). Between 2001 and 2004, she directed the Italian research unit in the European research project "Participation and the Dynamics of Social Positioning - The Case of Biotechnology. Images of Self and Other in Decision-Making Procedures" coordinated by Alfons Bora (University of Bielefeld). She was a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Philosophy of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (MD), USA, in Spring 1999 and at the Department of Philosophy of Rutgers University, New Brunswick (NJ), USA, in Fall 2002. She was a Visiting Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford, from January 3 to March 31, 2006. In September 2006 she delivered a cycle of invited talks on “Pragmatics and meaning” at Fuji Women’s University (Sapporo, Japan). In May-June 2010 she was invited professor at the Université de Picardie (Amiens) and the research center CURAPP (CNRS) and gave seminars at the Université de Picardie and at the EHESS (Paris). She has delivered lectures or read papers at various other Universities in Italy and elsewhere, at: Bologna, Chieti, Genova, Macerata, Milano, Milano Univ. Cattolica, Milano S. Raffaele, Padova, Palermo, Pavia, Perugia, Pisa, Roma Tre, S.Marino, Sassari, Siena, Venice; Albany (SUNY), Antwerp, Baltimore (Johns Hopkins), Barcelona, Berkeley Ca, Boston (B.U.), Cincinnati, Capodistria/Koper, Heidelberg, Leeds, Leuven, Ljubljana, Paris, New Brunswick NJ (Rutgers), Santander, Sheffield, Tilburg, Vienna. In recent years she gave invited talks at the following conferences: Parigi, Université Paris-Diderot, 17 March 2012, "Les sources britanniques de la pragmatique"; Colloquium “Belief Attribution”, Dipartimento di Filosofia of the University of Parma, Parma, 11 May 2012; 40° Congresso della Associazione Italiana Studi Semiotici “Semiotica delle soggettività”, Torino, 28-30 September 2012; International Conference “Meaning, Context and Cognition”, University of Lodz, Lodz, Poland, 11-13 April 2013; Conference “Impliciti nei testi normativi”, Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza of the University of Torino, Torino, 28 November 2013 (opening lecture); International Conference “Speech Acts in Theory and Practice”, University of Szczecin, Szczecin, Poland, 12-13 December 2013; Workshop on Speech Acts, Berlin, Zentrum für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft, 12-13 June 2015 Workshop “J.L. She is a member of the following associations: Società di Filosofia del Linguaggio (Board member 2008-2010), Società Italiana di Filosofia Analitica, Associazione Italiana di Studi Semiotici, International Pragmatics Association (Board member since 1991). She chaired the 8th International Pragmtics Conference (Riva del Garda, TN, July 2005). She is member of the editorial board of Esercizi Filosofici, electronic journal in Philosophy produced at her Department. She is active as a referee for various international journals in philosophy and linguistics. She is Advisory Editor of the Journal of Pragmatics and of Lodz Papers in Pragmatics, and member of the Editorial Board of the series "Pragmatics and Beyond" (John Benjamins, Amsterdam).
