Of course, this guide cannot be used to identify all lichens found in the Country, but it may be useful as a tutorial in workshops and courses for students and beginners, who will be asked to identify only the species which are included in the key. In this way, they will learn the basic terminology, and will make the first steps in lichen identification. The dichotomous key is also available in several stand-alone versions: printable, CD-Rom, and for mobile devices via the free app KeyToNature (Android and iOS). The key has been created using program FRIDA at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste (Italy), and will be further tested and implemented at the Department of Biology of the Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok, to encompass a broader set of species.13 -

Pubblicazione3d modeling of tumor growth(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2014)
;Stella, Sabrinaet al.This paper briefly describes a numerical model of avascular solid tumors that has recently been developed in Trieste and Verona. The model includes a mathematical description of the cell metabolism and of the cell cycle and includes the cells’ biomechanics. The model has been successfully validated with experimental data. The resulting software may be to used to perform in-silico tests, and can be further upgraded in a modular way.3 -

PubblicazioneA bibliographical (and not only) correspondence: letters of Simone Assemani to Giovanni Bernardo De Rossi(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2018)Callegari, MarcoSimone Assemani and Giovanni Bernardo De Rossi, the most famous and important Hebrew language scholar of his time in the Italian Catholic sphere, were in correspondence for about 25 years (1788-1814). The paper is focused on their letters, in particular on the main topics discussed by the two scholars: the controversy with Oluf Gerhard Tychsen over the so-called "Chair of St. Peter" (a marble seat located in the Basilica of St. Peter of Castello in Venice), the so-called "Arabic imposture” of Giuseppe Vella and the communication of literary news

PubblicazioneA catalogue of bird bones: an exercise in semantic web practice(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2010)
;Gudmundsson, Gudmundur ;Brewington, Seth D. ;McGovern, Thomas H.Petersen, AevarThe vast databases of natural history collections are increasingly being made accessible through the internet. The challenge is to place this data in a wider context that may reach beyond the interests of scholars only. The North Atlantic Biocultural Organization and Icelandic Institute of Natural History are jointly developing a web based catalogue of bird bones, comprising digital images, and related information from the museum database. Linking the bird bone catalogue with the semantic web developed by STERNA will integrate the bird bone catalogue with diverse information on birds that is directed towards the general public.6 -

PubblicazioneA collaborative and distributed identification tool for plants(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2010)Laroche, PhilippeWe are developing a website/smartphone application where users can deposit pictures of plants. Volunteers can then answer questions relating to these pictures: text questions, or drawing comparisons, or comparisons with other pictures. When sufficient data are available (50 or 100 of such answers) we can then propose an identification. The volunteers give answers based on “naive” observations of plant details. Example on a flower: do you see 3 petals, 4 petals, 5-8 petals, many petals ? For leaves, we display a small set of drawings, the set changes when the firsts questions provide sufficient information. To finish the identification, we allow for direct comparison with other pictures of similar detail. The questions are inside Iframe, and so are easily included on a network of participating web sites. Depending on the total number of visits to these sites, we shall have identifications within a few minutes or a few hours. We have now a set of 300 plants which are well-know in France. An important point about the method is that the volunteers help to classify the pictures we have as well as new pictures, so that the system is bootstrapping and scales easily. Moreover, we can easily experiment with new questions or drawings, to find those that reduce entropy most rapidly.

PubblicazioneA Comparative Study of Modified Animal Horns in Ancient Egypt & Modern African Tribes(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2017)
;Elsaeed, EssamKhalifa, HodaThe phenomenon of modifying an animal’s horn was widespread in ancient and modern cultures, especially in African tribes. The modification was typically to one horn whilst the second was allowed to grow naturally, but occasionally both horns were adapted. The Ancient Egyptian undertook the modification to distinguish the animal intended for similarly, modern African tribes follow this tradition and their cattle selected for horn modification have a very important role in both religious and economic lives of north and north- eastern African citizens. Their economic dependency is a result of the religious and symbolic importance of the cattle. Such African communities are not breeding cattle for the benefit of their milk, but to increase the length of their horns, which represents a special religious significance. The important religious and symbolic role of modified horns can be clarified by observing the traditions of contemporary African tribes who still worship cattle; a tradition that has a close similarity with that of a similar practice by the Ancient Egyptians. This Ancient Egyptian phenomenon, and its continuity in some African areas, is described by Anthropologists as “Cultural Survival”, and its study is the aim of this paper.3 -

PubblicazioneA cross-cultural contrastive analysis of interpersonal markers in promotional discourse in travel agency websites(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2017)Incelli, Ersilia AmedeaThe present study is an investigation into the use of interpersonal markers in English and Italian tourism texts obtained from three successful online travel agency websites: one American, one British and one Italian. The aim is to explore cross-linguistic, cross-cultural pragmatic perspectives through a comparative analysis of the discoursal and pragmatic features related to the interpersonal use of language, so as to better understand how the discursive patterns of tourism texts from different cultures might affect the communicative function, or the interactional metadiscourse strategies, in promotional discourse. Results show how a comparative analysis of interpersonal devices in tourism websites offers insights not only into the way in which culture is conveyed and transmitted via tourism discourse, but more specifically into how authorial stance is constructed in the websites and how the audience is engaged in the discourse. The premise is that an awareness of the cross-linguistic and cross-cultural differences involved in interpersonal discourse can contribute to improving cross-cultural understanding, and ultimately contribute to the fields of intercultural and translation studies.
